Stork experts are presenting a technical seminar, "Aspects of Metallurgical Testing." The seminar will be offered Friday, August 15, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

An introduction to ASTM and SAE standards
  • What's the difference between the various types of standards, i.e., test methods, specifications, practices, terminology and guides?
  • How are the standards developed?
  • How often are the test methods and other standards revised?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of SAE and ASTM specifications?
Aspects of hardness testing
  • Which ASTM test methods and hardness scales do you use for which metals?
  • What are some of the subtle requirements and pitfalls of hardness testing?
  • What are proper conversions for common metal alloys and what limits them?
  • How do you estimate mechanical properties based on hardness?
Aspects of mechanical testing

About the speaker
Dr. Tartaglia holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and is an expert in die and other wrought steels, aluminum, magnesium, fatigue, failure analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. He is an experienced expert witness in failure analysis litigation and has given numerous seminars and training classes on metals testing and analyses. Dr. Tartaglia was recently elected to the ASM International 2008 Class of Fellows.
